The top result for this search is Notion's own website. Then Reddit, then Evernote, and then two university teaching centres explaining the Cornell method.

Which tells you the search itself is split. Notation note taking pulls in people who meant Notion and mistyped it, and people who genuinely want to know how to structure notes on a page, and Google has quietly decided to serve both at once rather than pick.

Here's the answer to each. If you want a method, there are five taught at universities, they're Cornell, Outlining, Mapping, Charting and Sentence, and the honest differentiator between them is how much you have to decide while somebody's still talking. The method sections come first, since that's the part nobody's written properly.

The Five Methods, With Their Own Stated Weaknesses

I pulled these off the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's academic support pages and Cal Poly's writing and learning centre, both loaded on 28 July 2026, because university study-skills pages are where this material actually lives and the blog versions are all paraphrases of paraphrases.

What struck me is that both sources list disadvantages honestly, which the blog versions strip out. Here's the comparison built around that column instead of around the descriptions.

That Cornell row is worth staring at. A university study-skills page listing the disadvantages of a method as, literally, none. I don't fully believe it, and the reason I don't is buried in the description rather than the disadvantage column, since the method needs you to come back afterwards and fill in the cue column. A method whose cost is deferred looks free at the moment you're choosing it.

Mapping is the interesting opposite. UTC says it helps you visually track the lecture regardless of conditions and that little thinking is needed, then warns you may not notice when the speaker drops from a major point to a detail. So the cheapest method to run in the moment is also the one that quietly loses the hierarchy, and you find that out at revision time.

Cornell Is Twenty Nine Per Cent Of The Page

Nobody converts the Cornell measurements into anything you can use on a screen, so I did.

Two and a half inches on the left, six inches on the right, which adds to 8.5 inches, which is the width of US Letter paper. As proportions that's 29.4% of the page width for the recall column and 70.6% for the notes, before you take off the summary strip along the bottom.

Those proportions are the actual specification. The inches are just how you express them on one paper size, and if your notebook is 210 mm across rather than 8.5 inches, copying the inch numbers gives you a slightly different system from the one that was designed.

Now try running it on a phone in portrait. Twenty nine per cent of a phone screen is not a column, it's a gutter, and whatever notes go into the remaining seventy per cent are already about six words wide. Cornell is a landscape method and it always was, which is why it works on a tablet turned sideways and doesn't work in a notes app on a phone, no matter how many templates get sold for it.

The version I'd actually recommend on a small screen is to keep the ratio and drop the geometry. Notes on top, cue words underneath, summary at the bottom. Same three zones, stacked rather than columned. That's my adaptation rather than anything Walter Pauk wrote, so treat it as a suggestion from a person who writes blog posts.

Which Methods Survive Digital

Here's the table I actually wanted while researching this. Not which app is best, which method still functions in each kind of tool. The judgments below are mine, based on what each type of software makes easy versus what the method requires.

Look at the Mapping row and the Cornell row. Those are the two methods that lose the most when they leave paper, and they're also the two that get recommended hardest in digital note-taking content, generally by people selling a template.

The Outlining and Sentence rows are the opposite. Both are essentially free in every digital tool, both need nothing but a text box, and neither ever gets recommended because there's nothing to sell alongside them.

I'd take that as the practical finding here. If you're typing, outline. If you're handwriting on a tablet, Cornell in landscape or map it. Those are different methods for different input devices, and treating method choice as a personality question rather than a hardware question is where most of this advice goes wrong.

If You Actually Meant Notion

Fair enough, plenty of people did, and the pricing has a couple of details worth knowing.

Notion is free for personal use. Plus is $10 per member a month and Business is $20 per member a month, both quoted monthly on the pricing page I loaded, with yearly billing advertised as saving up to 20% without the resulting annual figure printed next to it.

The free plan's limits are the part to read. File uploads cap at 5 MB each, page history keeps 7 days, and you get 10 external guests. There's also a block limit that applies once a workspace has two or more members, which the pricing page mentions without quantifying, so I can tell you it exists and not how big it is.

Seven days of history is the one I'd think about before putting a year of notes in. That's not a backup window, it's an undo window. If you mangle a page and notice in a fortnight, the version you wanted is gone on the free plan.

The Method I Use By Accident

I should be honest that I don't sit in lectures and I haven't for a long time, so I've got no receipt on which of these five holds up across a semester.

What I do have is a mild shock from writing this piece, which is that my own note-taking is the Sentence method and I never chose it. Every new thought on its own line, in the order it arrived, no hierarchy. UTC's own table says the weakness of that is you can't tell major points from minor ones later and it's difficult to edit without rewriting. Both of those are true of my notes and I'd never connected the two facts before reading a university study-skills page for a blog post.

The seven digital products I've shipped were all planned in exactly that shape. Lines of text, numbered, in arrival order. It worked, which I mention not as an endorsement but because it's the honest data point available to me, and a method with documented weaknesses still beats not writing anything down.

If I were starting over I'd try Charting for anything with repeating categories, because looking at the description it's obviously right for that and I'd simply never thought of it.

Questions That Come Up

Is Cornell actually better, or is it just famous? Famous helps, and it's also the only one on the list whose entire design point is reviewing rather than capturing. Every other method optimises the moment of writing. Cornell optimises the week after, which is why it feels like more work and why it's the one universities push.

Which method is fastest during a fast lecture? Sentence, and both sources basically say so, since it's recommended for content that comes fast and asks nothing of you structurally. You pay for it later.

Can I use two methods at once? Sort of, and charting inside an outline is the pairing I'd try. What doesn't combine is mapping with anything linear, because you've committed the page to a shape.

Does typing or handwriting matter more than the method? I think so, honestly, more than most study advice admits. What if I want the notes to still be readable in ten years? What I'd Try First

Pick by your input device, not by which method sounds most impressive.

Typing means outline. Handwriting on paper or a tablet in landscape means Cornell, and set the ratio at roughly thirty per cent for cues before you write anything. Anything with categories that repeat, chart it. And if the talking is faster than your thinking, sentence method, numbered, and accept that you're buying a cleanup job later.
